The new Google Interface!!

Thursday, November 26, 2009 Posted by prashant View Comments
So Google have redesigned their homepage and search. Here are some screenshots. Take a look.

Finally they changed something else beside the Google logo :)

Everyone have seen the feature of Google search engine, where it shows relevant searches while you type the search keywords. Often its quite funny to watch the relevant searches. In the new Google, searching for webpages is more intuitive. When you type a keyword and if it matches a name of some website, the first relevant search will be of that particular website.Screenshot below:

Will keep updating this space...

The 'new' orkut !!

Thursday, November 5, 2009 Posted by prashant View Comments
Orkut is a social networking website, and is driven mainly because of Indians and Brazilians. According to a report 20 million Indians use orkut, and thus orkut is the leading social networking website in India.
But recently, reports claiming that Facebook users are increasing at a very fast rate were doing rounds on the internet. This rush was mostly driven because of the Facebook apps, the following graph shows the rise in the Facebook users.

Facebook users increased to 3,500,000 but still nowhere near orkut users.

Though there is no chance of Orkut loosing users right now, Google decided to bring changes in Orkut interface. Termed as the 'new' Orkut, the new features are not so new to a social networking user.
Following are the main changes that will be easily noticed:

    1.Status Bar:

This is familiar for a Facebook user, although there was a provision to set a status before the changes, but now anyone can comment on your status and have a conversation right there. No need to go to scrapbook.
Here is the comment box which appears below the status message.

     2. Link Toolbar:
I dont know why but they have removed most of the links and kept only two links: Home   Profile

This change have not gone down well with the people involved in communities because there is no way to directly go to the community list.

      3. Photo Upload
This change is a good one. Photo upload is faster and multiple photos can be uploaded by selecting multiple photographs with ctrl key. Also the upload is faster than before, which took a lot more time.

      4. Scrapbook:

With not much changes, they have included a refresh link right on scrapbook, nice. Also there is a HTML link above the text area, which allows user to paste html code, good. But the thing I wanted was fully loaded toolbar with all types of customizations shortcuts and fonts and html codes. Looks like we still have to rely on javascripts.

      5. Search:

Searching for freinds or communities in your profile is easier, Orkut searches your profile as you type the words thus no need to type the full name and wait for the search results.

I expect more changes because its still in the beta stage. Also orkut have provided a feedback form, so more changes must be on the way.The new orkut is invitation based but a request of a new orkut user account can be made here: new orkut request spreadsheet

Why is China worried about India?

Thursday, October 15, 2009 Posted by prashant View Comments
Everyone remembers how Indian media created an uproar over the Chinese incursions and aggressive stance towards India. Whether it was a hype or a reality is still a debate. Many of us may think that Chinese media do not even bother to mention about India's worries but actually they do. The prime minister's visit to Arunachal Pradesh have irked the Chinese officials, and now they are using the media to warn India and to make India look like an expansionist, hegemonic nation, which aims to be a super power.
The recent article published in China's people's daily, the government's mouthpiece, says this about the recent noise created in Indian media,

Nobody can deny that today's India is a power. In recent years, Indians have become more narrow-minded and intolerable of outside criticism as nationalism sentiment rises, with some of them even turning to hegemony. It can be proved by India's recent provocation on border issues with China.

Apparently, China blames India for all the incursions that took place all along the Indo-Chinese border.
This author of this article goes on to describe the reason's behind India's expansionist Ideologies. They think that since India has been under foreign rulers throughout the history, now they want to rule others. Although Indians have no imperialistic plans, the Chinese have a reason about being paranoid about foreign powers invading China. In ancient China, dynasties were always paranoid about the invasions from Mongolia or other powers, and The Great wall of China is a standing proof of their paranoia, which was built and rebuilt several times by different dynasties.

But everybody knows that India never attacked any country in its history as long as it goes, so why are the Chinese so worried about Indians being imperialistic? Well, the reason according to them is because the Himalayas stop the Indians from increasing their borders northwards, Pakistan confront India on the west, that is why Indians are not able to attack any nation till now although there is no mention in the article about borders with Nepal and Bhutan in this context.

Another editorial printed in the Global Times, which according to the wikipedia, have strong pro-government stance in its editorial, have said this about the Indian Prime Ministers visit in Arunachal Pradesh.

In the past the Chinese government has sought to build consensus in border negotiations through making concessions in exchange for reciprocal action.

China has maintained that same approach with India. India, however, will make a fatal error if it mistakes China's approach for weakness.

The Chinese government and public regard territorial integrity as a core national interest, one that must be defended with every means.

Nothing needs to be said about this article, they are threatening openly. But its very awkward to know that the Chinese are losing sleep over India. May be they are doing just the same what the Indian media did, create noise over the 'China threat', now the Chinese media is creating noise about the 'India threat'. But the Chinese are forgetting the fact that at anytime Indian media will have more authenticity and reliability than the Chinese media. So any attempt by the Chinese media to show India in a bad light would miserably fail.

Nobel peace prize for nothing?

Friday, October 9, 2009 Posted by prashant View Comments
A nobel peace prize for barack obama, the first question comes to our mind is, "what did he do till now to earn a nobel prize?". after all even our father of nation Gandhiji wasn't fortunate enough to earn this award although he was nominated in 1937,1938,1939,1947 and 1948. Lets list out some achievements of Barack Obama till now during his presidency,

Some of the Obama's key achievements
1. Last month, Obama became the first U.S. president to preside over a meeting of the Security Council, which unanimously adopted a U.S.-written resolution calling for progress toward his goal of nuclear-weapons disarmament. The administration also expressed greater support for the International Criminal Court, which Bush opposed, and erased U.S. debts to the UN for the first time since 1999.

2. Obama has distinguished himself from his predecessor with efforts to repair relations with the Muslim world. In a June 4 speech at Cairo University, he pledged to “seek a new beginning” for the U.S. and the Islamic world and end a “cycle of suspicion and discord.”

3. Scuttling for Bush administration's ABM plan based in Poland, thus bringing in praises from Russia.

4. Issuing out statement for gradual withdrawal from Iraq.

and he also 'closed' Guantanamo bay prison although only 27 prisoners have been shifted till now.

But, the question still remains, "is that enough?", well i have another question for you.

The nominations for the Nobel peace prize were closed on February 1, 2009, and January 20th was the day when he sworn in and took the office of President of United States. The question is what did he do for peace internationally, to be even nominated for the Nobel peace prize?

Seems like The Norwegian Nobel Committee was convinced somehow that this man will do miracles in the coming months, and everybody will be happy to see that their favorite president is getting the Nobel peace prize. But apparently things didn't turn out the way they 'thought', it would.

Hotmail Passwords Phished

If you are one of those rare specimens who actually use a Hotmail account (we'd like to see you, some day) do you remember logging on to a website that looked like Hotmail (same as Windows Live), just over the weekend? If your answer is in the affirmative, you might want to check whether your account has been compromised.

Thousands of hotmail accounts and according to one source gmail accounts were uploaded on a website, exposing how easily email accounts get hacked. For most of the people, its a mystery how their account got hacked. They think that the hacker must be a very smart one to hack so many accounts.

Unfortunately this is not the case.Social networking is the biggest thing on the internet right now, and thus they provide the biggest platform for the hackers to find their victims.

I am not saying that people don't know how to avoid clicking on links with suspicious names and coming from unknown sources. But the sad fact is when someone learns to hack an email account by phishing pages, which is quite easy to learn, their first targets are his friends only. So thinking that its safe to click and give personal information on a website sent by one of my 'friends' is not actually a wise decision.

There are some websites which allows users to change the url of their phishing pages to look almost the same as original website. So thinking that www.gmail.com and www.gmail.XX is one and the same is again a mistake.

Clicking on javascript's or pasting them in url can be harmful for your account.
Keep changing passwords.Everybody knows this but nobody cares.

Wave and the wars.

Wednesday, September 23, 2009 Posted by prashant View Comments
Wars? waves? Of course, you might be confused what i am talking about. Well here it goes. There's a war going on right now, its called the browser war. The fighters are Google, IE, Mozilla Firefox, opera, safari etc.But i wont talk about everyone of them. I will restrict myself to Google and its upcoming feature Google wave, because i believe that Google is going to win this war and am going to side with the winner.

Many of us still don't know what Google wave is about. Well, shortly, Google wave is something which combines everything we use to communicate on the internet. It combines email, chat, social networking, instant messaging, wiki etc. Google wave will be a single platform to do everything we do on the above mentioned things. This is really cool i think.

The best thing about Google wave is that its open source. This is really a dream come true for the coders and people like me who really like chrome but unable to leave Firefox because of the awesome add-on's and java scripts. I think keeping Google wave open sourced is an attempt to attract the Firefox users like me.I think i will really jump on to chrome the day, chrome becomes like Firefox when it comes to addons. But for now, we only have some theme's for chrome.Well chrome 3 is quite good though.

According to Wikipedia, around 66% people still use IE. Google wave needs a platform which supports java script and HTML 5, and so IE wont be able to run google wave. Thus Google wave came with an add-on for IE, Google wave frames, which will enable IE users to use Google wave. But of course this is another attempt to shift some more IE users towards chrome.Interested? This is the link
Google’s Plan to Kill Internet Explorer?

Google wave

Google wave is right now limited to some lucky one's.Those lucky ones will make Google wave good enough later to be used by 1,00,000 people who will get the chance to use Google wave on September 30. Then lesser mortals like us can get a chance to use the much improved version of Google wave. Long wait.
